Reach trucks: more height in less aisle
The reach truck is designed for warehouses with high racking and narrow aisles. Instead of carrying the load in front of the axle like a counterbalance truck, it moves the mast (or the forks) forward to pick up the pallet and retracts it over its base to travel, so the machine takes up much less space when turning.
What it is for
High-level indoor storage: distribution centres, spare parts warehouses, dry food stores or any building where every metre of aisle counts. It lets you make the most of the building’s height and reduce aisle width compared with a counterbalance forklift.
How it works
The operator usually sits or stands sideways, which improves upward visibility. The front support legs carry the load, so it does not need a large counterweight. Many include fork tilt, side shift and height assistance systems.
Reach or counterbalance
If the warehouse is indoors, with high racking and narrow aisles, a reach truck is usually the best option. If you need to load lorries, go outdoors or move heavy loads, an electric or diesel counterbalance truck will be more versatile. We explain this in counterbalance versus reach truck.
Maintenance
As it works at great heights, the condition of the mast, chains, sensors and battery is critical for safety. We recommend rigorous preventive maintenance.
