Lead-acid or lithium

Lead-acid batteries are the most widespread: lower initial investment, but they need topping up with water, full charge cycles and a ventilated charging room. Lithium batteries accept fast charging during breaks, need no electrolyte maintenance and usually have a longer cycle life. We look at this in the advantages of lithium batteries.

How to look after it

  • Avoid deep discharges.
  • Complete full charge cycles on lead-acid batteries.
  • Check the electrolyte level and top up with distilled water.
  • Keep terminals clean and connections tight.
  • Use a charger that matches the voltage and ampere-hour rating.

When to replace it

When it no longer lasts the working shift, overheats, a cell fails or it does not hold its charge despite maintenance. We check its condition and tell you whether it is worth repairing or replacing.

Voltage and capacity

The voltage (24, 48, 80 V, etc.) is determined by the machine; the capacity in ampere-hours (Ah) sets the run time. When replacing a battery, the voltage, battery compartment dimensions and weight must be respected, because it forms part of the counterweight.
