Electric pallet trucks: what they are and when they pay off

The electric pallet truck is a piece of materials handling equipment with a motor and battery that lifts the pallet a few centimetres off the ground and moves it with no effort from the operator. It is the natural next step when a hand pallet truck is no longer enough: long distances, ramps, heavy loads or many movements a day.

What it is for

Loading and unloading lorries, order picking at floor level, transfers between areas of the warehouse and feeding production lines. It reduces operator fatigue and increases the number of pallets moved per hour.

Types

Pedestrian

Compact and easy to handle in tight spaces.

With fold-down platform

The operator rides on it over long distances, at higher speed.

Double-pallet or with lift

Some models move two pallets at once or raise the pallet to an ergonomic height for order picking.

Lead-acid or lithium battery

Lithium allows fast charging during breaks and needs no topping up; lead-acid has a lower initial cost. More details in lithium batteries.

How to choose

  1. Capacity: the most common models move 1,600 to 2,500 kg.
  2. Fork length to suit your pallets (Euro pallet, US pallet, etc.).
  3. Daily distance: if it is long, choose one with a platform.
  4. Ramps and docks: motor power and brakes.
  5. Run time and battery charging time.

Maintenance

Battery and charger, drive wheel and load rollers, tiller and braking system, and the hydraulic lift pump. Regular maintenance prevents the most common stoppages.

Manual or electric

A hand pallet truck is enough for short distances and few pallets a day. If distances exceed a few dozen metres, there are ramps or many pallets are moved, an electric model pays off in productivity and occupational health.

Frequently asked questions

What is an electric pallet truck?

A piece of equipment with an electric motor and battery that lifts the pallet a few centimetres and moves it with no effort from the operator. It can be pedestrian or ride-on with a platform.

How much load can an electric pallet truck move?

The most common models move 1,600 to 2,500 kg; there are higher-capacity versions for specific uses.

When does it pay off compared with a manual one?

When distances are long, there are ramps or many pallets are moved each day: it reduces fatigue and increases output.

How long does the battery last?

It depends on the technology, the ampere-hour rating and how intensively it is used; it normally covers a working day. Lithium batteries accept fast charging during breaks.

Can they be hired?

Yes, from 1 day to 60 months, with maintenance and third-party liability insurance included.

Do you repair electric pallet trucks?

Yes, of any make: battery, charger, wheels, tiller, brakes and hydraulics.

Is training needed to use one?

Yes, the operator must receive suitable training for the materials handling equipment they use.
